What’s the Difference Between a Domain and a Website?
Last Updated: May 25, 2026When you are getting your business online, it is easy for terms like domain, website, and hosting to start blending together. They are closely connected, so the confusion makes sense. But each one plays a different role in helping people find and use your website. A helpful way to understand the difference is to think about an apartment. Your domain is the apartment number on the door, and in some ways, the door itself. Your website is everything you brought inside and arranged for people to see. Your hosting is the apartment space, including the utilities that make the space usable. Once you understand how these pieces work together, it becomes much easier to know what you own, what you need to renew, and where to look when something needs attention. What Is a Domain? A domain is the web address people type in when they want to visit your website. For example, yourbusiness.com is a domain. It gives people a simple, memorable way to find you online without needing to know the technical location of your website behind the scenes. Using the apartment example, your domain is like the apartment number on the door. It tells visitors, browsers, and...
What happens if I don’t renew my domain and let my domain expire?
Last Updated: May 5, 2026You might be wondering, “Do I have to renew my domain right now?” Sometimes it’s tempting to wait until the very last minute. However, delaying your domain renewal can be surprisingly risky and could even lead to losing your domain, entirely. Here’s what happens when your domain expires, and why it’s so important to renew it on time. The Bad News About Expired Domains When your domain expires through HostHuski (and really anywhere), it is immediately deactivated: A temporary parking page will be displayed. Your website and email services stop working instantly. You cannot update your domain settings or site while it’s expired. At this point, you still have a chance to renew your domain, but the clock is ticking. The Good News: Grace Period (But It’s Not Guaranteed) Our domain vendor provides a non-guaranteed grace period of up to 25–30 days after expiration. During this time, you can still renew your domain at the standard renewal rate. But here’s the catch: your domain can be canceled at any time, even during the grace period, depending on the TLD and registry rules. Once canceled, it can no longer be renewed or recovered through regular means. We strongly recommend: Enabling auto-renew...
What is Domain Privacy Protection and Why Is It Important?
Last Updated: May 30, 2026What is Domain Privacy Protection and Do I Still Need It? When you register a domain name, your domain registration includes contact information such as a name, email address, phone number, and mailing address. Historically, much of this information could be found through a public lookup system called WHOIS. Because of that, many domain owners used Domain Privacy Protection, sometimes called WHOIS Privacy or ID Protect, to help keep their personal contact details from being publicly visible. Today, domain privacy works a little differently than it used to. This article explains what has changed, what RDAP is, and when ID Protect may or may not still be useful. What Changed with Domain Privacy? Over the last few years, the way domain contact information is handled has quietly improved behind the scenes. Most domain registries now use a more modern system called RDAP, which stands for Registration Data Access Protocol. In simple terms, RDAP has made domain contact privacy better by default for many domain owners. For most individuals and small businesses, personal details such as your name, email address, phone number, and mailing address are already hidden from standard public domain lookups, even without a paid Domain Privacy or ID...
