What is Domain Privacy Protection and Do I Still Need It? #
When you register a domain name, your domain registration includes contact information such as a name, email address, phone number, and mailing address. Historically, much of this information could be found through a public lookup system called WHOIS.
Because of that, many domain owners used Domain Privacy Protection, sometimes called WHOIS Privacy or ID Protect, to help keep their personal contact details from being publicly visible.
Today, domain privacy works a little differently than it used to. This article explains what has changed, what RDAP is, and when ID Protect may or may not still be useful.
What Changed with Domain Privacy? #
Over the last few years, the way domain contact information is handled has quietly improved behind the scenes. Most domain registries now use a more modern system called RDAP, which stands for Registration Data Access Protocol.
In simple terms, RDAP has made domain contact privacy better by default for many domain owners. For most individuals and small businesses, personal details such as your name, email address, phone number, and mailing address are already hidden from standard public domain lookups, even without a paid Domain Privacy or ID Protect add-on.
This means that, for many customers, ID Protect may no longer provide much additional benefit. Because of this, we generally recommend reviewing whether you still need it so you are not paying for something that may not be necessary for your domain.
What is Domain Privacy Protection? #
Domain Privacy Protection, also known as WHOIS Privacy or ID Protect, is an optional domain add-on that helps hide or replace your domain contact details in public registration records.
In the past, this was one of the main ways to prevent your personal information from being publicly visible through WHOIS lookups.
Today, because of RDAP and modern registry privacy practices, most personal contact details are already hidden from standard public lookups for many domain owners. That means ID Protect is often less essential than it used to be.
Is There Any Risk Without ID Protect? #
For most customers, the risk of personal information being publicly visible through standard domain lookups is very low. RDAP has improved privacy protections for many domain owners, especially individuals and small businesses.
That said, no system is perfect. In limited situations, some domain information may still be accessible outside of standard public lookups, depending on the domain extension, registry rules, business type, or other domain-related circumstances.
Because of that, ID Protect is still available for customers who want an additional layer of privacy and peace of mind.
Who Might Still Want ID Protect? #
ID Protect may still be worth keeping for:
- Business or corporate domains where extra privacy controls are preferred
- Higher-visibility brands that may attract more attention
- Certain domain extensions where registry privacy rules may work differently
- Customers who simply want extra peace of mind, even if the practical benefit is limited
Should I Remove ID Protect? #
For many individuals and small businesses, it may make sense to remove ID Protect before your next domain renewal so you are not paying the additional yearly fee for a service you likely do not need.
However, this choice is up to you. Some customers prefer to keep ID Protect because they want every available layer of privacy, even if RDAP already hides most of their personal information from standard public lookups.
No action is required unless you want to remove ID Protect before your domain renews.
Important Renewal and Refund Information #
We are not able to automatically remove ID Protect from domains in customer accounts. If you do not want the add-on, you will need to remove it from your domain before it renews.
Please also keep the following in mind:
- All domain registrations, transfers, and renewals are final once processed.
- Domain charges are non-refundable, whether or not ID Protect is included.
- This is because domain transactions are handled by domain registries and cannot be reversed once completed.
